UPDATE I haven’t heard anything more about Ebonlore, although there are rumors of bans. There really are level 80’s now, most achieved through broken game mechanics (more details here in my latest post).
UPDATE This is all still hearsay, and realistically, we’ll probably never know for sure because the rumor mill went crazy on this one. The Ebonlore guild directory has been updated to list the previously displayed level 80’s as level 81’s. The rumor is that the guild had a contest to see who could get to level 80 the fastest. The inner council wasn’t eligible for the contest, so they were listed as level 80’s. The highest is in the 50’s. Still pretty crazy, because the 10,000xp exploit was real and verified. The exploit was supposedly fixed in one of the patches last night. No word on what Funcom is doing to punish players who took advantage.

Unbelievable. I expected it to happen, but it still sucks that it really did happen.
Ebonlore, a guild that is infamous for exploiting MMORPG’s, supposedly has SIX level 80 members. Proof is a bit sketchy. People are pointing to the guild directory that lists the level 80 members. Here is a screenshot, if you don’t want to risk visiting the guild’s website.
Supposedly, there is a repeatable quest that grants 10,000xp. It isn’t supposed to be repeatable. There seems to be evidence that Ebonlore had closed beta members who knew about this exploit and didn’t reveal it to Funcom. There have been multiple postings on various forums reporting this exploit. If the exploit is real, the level 80’s might be real. In any case, the rumors are definitely spreading.
Something similar happened in Anarchy Online years ago. I vaguely remember a weapon that was glitched and basically instantly killed anything it hit. The exploiters were eventually banned once Funcom figured it out.
Ebonlore apparently already has a guild city as well. It was reported as news on their forums.
Ebonlore has a history of exploiting and have had many accounts banned in various games. If this rumor is true, expect Funcom to go down hard on this guild. In my experience, Funcom isn’t afraid to ban accounts.
For everyone else, the official word is that it will take an average person about 250 hours to reach level 80. That means a trained team who knows all the tricks (legitimate) would definitely finish far before that.

A little dated reply, but I noticed this blog just now. Sure there was a repeatable quest to get 10k. They patched it out to give less xp but its still repeatable (I think its like 5k now).
Even if they left it in, it wouldnt be worth it once the mobs stopped giving exp. It takes 3 MILLION xp to get from 79 to 80. That means for that one level if would take you 300 times repeating that quest to get the level. If it wasn’t contested, It would take you over a day /played just to get that one level which would be ridiculously inefficient.
Yup, that’s the way blogs work. When I published this post, this was the latest news from the community, but that’s often fed by the rumor mill. Now that we know how leveling works, a 10k repeatable quest isn’t much of an issue. I can get 10k experience on my priests in a matter of minutes. At the time though when most people were still in Tortage, 10k seemed like so much!
Since the Guild Leader & Inner Council were not able to compete in the contest, they just coded their DKP Roster to show them as already level 80.
Ebonlore was not even the first level 80 on the server…
